A new study confirms that people who adhere to global recommendations for cancer prevention significantly reduce their risk of developing it.

About 40% of all cancers are linked to lifestyle factors, such as physical inactivity, smoking, obesity, poor diet and alcohol consumption, suggesting that many cancers are preventable. To prove this theory, researchers at the University of Newcastle conducted a study to measure the effectiveness of cancer prevention recommendations issued by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) 2018 and the American Institute for Cancer Research. on cancer (AICR). The results were published Tuesday, June 13 in the medical journal Cancerthey found that adhering to a healthier lifestyle helps prevent several forms of the disease.

Prevention is an effective way to fight cancer

In France, every year nearly 382,000 new cancers are detected and 157,400 people die from them, according to the National Cancer Institute (Inca). However, nearly half of these cancers are linked to exposure to avoidable risk factors, including smoking (17 cancer locations), alcohol consumption (8 locations), poor diet, obesity or overweight.

The study conducted by the University of Newcastle shows that compliance with recommendations related to prevention leads to a reduction 12% risk of bowel cancer11% of the risk of breast cancer and 8% of the risk of lung cancer. Dr Fiona Malcomson, Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition and co-author of the study said: “Our findings are exciting as they provide further evidence for ways to reduce the risk of developing cancer.”

However, the researchers point out that there are other non-modifiable factors, such as a family history of cancer and environmental exposures, which can also affect the risk of developing the disease.
